Spikes Coaching Limited (UKDBA qualified coaches) are working in partnership with Surrey Young Carers to offer young people in Surrey the opportunity to take part in the fastest growing school sport in the UK – dodgeball.
According to Becker (2002), ‘Young carers are children and young persons under 18 who provide or intend to provide care, assistance or support to another family member. They carry out, often on a regular basis, significant or substantial caring tasks and assume a level of responsibility, which would usually be associated with an adult. The person receiving care is often a parent, but can be a sibling, grandparent or other relative who is disabled, has some chronic illness, mental health problem or other condition connected with a need for care, support or supervision’. Care giving responsibilities often lead to bullying from peers, stress, physical concerns, and mental and / or health related issues. The extra time invested in caring for others creates less time for education, seeking employment and being able to pursue normal activities associated with being a young person. Young carers typically experience traumatic life changing events such as bereavement, family break-ups, losing income and housing or seeing the effects of an illness or addiction affect their loved one. In most cases it typically means that a young carer simply does not have the time to have fun.
At Spikes Coaching Limited. We have a 'sport for all' ethos and want all young people to have the opportunity to work with our highly qualified coaches. The beauty of offering dodgeball is that it is of a high intensity meaning young carers are exposed to intense physical activity, it is time efficient and the skill level is relatively basic compared to more complex sports. This creates a healthy, competitive atmosphere where everyone invloved can take part and enjoy the benefits of sport. For more information plesse visit us at www.spikescoaching.co.uk
