BRITISH DODGEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP 2008
TOURNAMENT REPORT
by Daniel Calver (Staffordshire University)
Jammy Dodgers became the Dodgeball Champions 2008 by beating surprise package Leeds Met Carnegie II in the final 4-0, to add to their title of North Division Champions.
Captain Ryan Knight led by example as he put his record of fastest thrower to good use as numerous players were unable to dodge his throws. Knight and the rest of the Dodgers had clearly worked on their tactics before the tournament, playing to their strengths culminating in a three man attack of Knight, Adam King and Ali Hall.
Jammy Dodgers progressed into the final coming top of their group, which included Staffs Uni Sentinels and Snoop Dodge, of which Jammy Dodgers comfortably beat both. The Dodgers then defeated Leicester City Ligers in the semi-final 4 games to 2 to progress into the final.
Leeds Met Carnegie I, Dodgeball Champions in 2007, were outshone by their counterparts Leeds Met Carnegie II who saw off the New City Outlaws and Worcester Tigers in their group, before beating Warwick Uni Warriors 6-3 in a one minute tie breaker, having drawn 3-3 in games.
Warwick Uni Warriors were into their semi-final against Leeds Met Carnegie II through some controversy after their game against Northampton Cobras ended in a square-up of players after confusion from a referee’s call. Warriors went on to win the game though Cobras believed they had successfully taken out a Warriors player, which hadn’t been seen or given by the referees.
Having lost in the resulting semi-final, Warwick Uni Warriors lost their third place play-off to Leicester City Ligers, who, like winners Jammy Dodgers, played to their strengths and defended well with Richard Gray covering his remaining players in the game.
Ligers had seen off University Champions Balls of Steel 6-1 and a 2-2 draw with Dodge Vipers secured their place as group winners and progressed into the semi-final to play Jammy Dodgers.
Champions in 2007, Leeds Met Carnegie I finished bottom of their group which included other runners up from their divisions Warwick Uni Warriors of the University Division and Northampton Cobras of the Southern Division. Leeds did however maintain some dignity from the tournament by beating Worcester Tigers 4-0 to finish the tournament in ninth place.
Behind Leeds Met Carnegie II, Staffs Uni Sentinels were another surprise package of the tournament. Having failed to win either of their initial group games, losing to Jammy Dodgers and drawing too Snoop Dodge, Staffs Uni progressed into the 5th place play-off through individual games won against eventual winners Jammy Dodgers and in player’s out.
Staffs Uni then beat University Champions Balls of Steel of Nottingham University 4-1, to set up a 5th place match against the New City Outlaws, who had defeated Northampton Cobras 4-2. The giants that are New City Outlaws proved too much for Staffs Uni though as the Outlaws won 4-0.
