The final was an all-England affair which saw England White Lions victorious in a seesaw battle against England Red Lions. The tournament was contested by teams from Italy, Sweden, N. Ireland, Scotland and Wales, as well as the two teams from the host nation. The event was played in Kingston-upon-Thames on Sunday 19th September.
The two England teams had dominated the group matches. The White Lions had defeated the Red Lions by 5-4 in the group encounter and they repeated this feat in the final. The Whites took an early 2-0 lead in the best-of-nine final match, before the Reds replied but Whites took the fourth to re-establish a two game margin. England Reds then moved up a gear taking three in a row (3-0, 4-2 & 3-0) to go into a 4-3 lead. The White Lions showed their hunger for victory by replying with a convincing 4-1 win in the penultimate game to put the European title on the ninth and deciding game. The last game was a tight tense affair with power throwing and big catches causing the lead to change time and time again; England White Lions finally victorious by 6 players to 4.
The other five teams at the tournament were all closely matched. Team Scotland made it through to the semi-finals, with 3 wins and a draw, and Italy also progressed through but they had to battle against Sweden (Stockholm Dodgeball Association) in the final group match to see which one of the two teams made the play-offs. After taking a one game lead, Sweden replied with two consecutive wins only for Italy to level the match with a convincing 5-0 game. Games 5 & 6 were both 1 player wins for Italy and they sealed the victory and a play-off position with a 5-2 win in game 7.
Scotland and Italy could not match up to the all-round strength of the England teams in the semi-finals but both nations showed their passion in the Third Place Match. The Scots took Game 1 and Italy replied to level the match, Scotland then established a 3-1 lead and again Italy replied to level the contest at 3 games each. The Scots powered to a 4-3 lead with a big 6-0 game win only for Italy to finish off Team Scotland in less than two minutes and win Game 8 by 3-0. The decider saw Scotland gain full ball control from the opening run and use this to establish a lead which they extended with some great catching skills, eventually putting out all the Italians to take Third Place with a dominating 6-0 Game 9 victory.
International Last Player Standing Champion was Samuel Maycock (England White Lions).
The whole event was played in a great sporting spirit and the atmosphere generated by the teams and their supporters made the tournament all the more exciting. All the teams made new international Dodgeball friends during the weekend which added to the tournament atmosphere, as teams from different countries supported each other vocally during play.
The weekend also saw the initial meeting of teams from different European nations who all agreed to form the European Dodgeball Federation.
