WARWICK UNIVERSITY WARRIORS I retained the UK Championship title they won last year, defeating Hinckley’s Jammy Dodgers in a repeat of the 2010 Final. Warriors gained revenge over JD, who beat Warwick in the Final of the Central Championships and also won Season One of the Premier League, beating the No.1 University team into second place in both competitions. However, Nationals belonged to Warwick, who had to win the hard way, battling all the way to the Final from Round One, after losing the Regional Championship to JD; Regional Champions entered the tournament in Round Three. Warwick won the Final by 4 games to 1 leaving no doubt about who are 2011 Champions.
Warwick’s route to the Final started off with the reigning champions winning all three matches in Round One, only Reepham Raiders able to take anything off the Warriors, in the 2-4 Raiders defeat. Warwick got a bye through Round Two as group winners and although they won all three matches to top their Round Three group, they were given a much sterner test. They had to recover from 1-2 down to Meteors (Lutterworth) by winning four games in a row to record a 5-2 victory; both their other matches were even closer, 4-3 wins over UoB Bedford Bulls and their club mates Warwick Warriors II. Warwick I’s semi-final was a re-match against Bedford Bulls and this time it was even closer; the KO match went down to the wire after Bedford won Game 1, Warwick won 3 in a row only for Bedford to hold Game 5 to a draw and then win the last 2 to level the match at 3 games each and take the Semi-final into Overtime; Warwick claiming a 3 player to 2 victory in the one minute additional game.
Jammy Dodgers began their route to the Final by winning all their Round Three matches. They started with emphatic victories over Reepham Raiders 6-1 and Leicester City Liger 5-1 before Northern Champions MUDS Elite (University of Manchester) almost got the better of JD, holding a 2-3 lead before Dodgers won both the last two games by 3-0. JD’s semi-final against Leicestershire neighbours, Meteors was also a tough battle; JD started off by winning the first three but Meteors reduced the deficit by winning Games 4 & 5, then Hinckley’s finest claimed a 4 player win in Game 6 to make it to the Final for the fourth consecutive year.
The 3rd Place Play-off a rematch between Meteors and UoB Bedford Bulls. Two weeks earlier Meteors emerged victorious, by 4-2, to win the National League title and defeated Bedford in the Round Three group match by 4-3. This time it was even closer. Bedford started strongly, winning the first two games, Game 3 was drawn, then Meteors won the next two games to level the score at 2-2; Bedford smashed a big 6-0 win in Game 6 only for Meteors to demolish Bedford by 5-0 in the last game to take the match into Overtime , which was the second time in consecutive matches for the Bulls. The extra time decider was in the balance throughout the full one minute of play and it was Bedford Bulls who emerged as winners by four players to two.
UoB BEDFORD BULLS WOMEN I overcame last year’s champions, Southampton Dodgettes, in the Final to become Women’s UK Champions. UK Championship debutants, Bedford overcame a high quality field to win the title and Southampton made them fight all the way. They played each other in the group stages, where the Dodgettes recovered from 2-3 down to claim a 4-3 victory, but in the Final it was Bedford who emerged with the win. The Final saw Bedford move into a two games to nil lead before Southampton could get onto the scoreboard in Game 3. The fourth game finished all square, at 3 players each, and then Bedford moved into a commanding 3-1 lead, meaning Southampton had to win the last two games to level the match. Despite a great, hard fought game by Dodgettes, Bedford hung on to keep game six to a 4-4 score line and win the match by three games to one and claim the national title.
Earlier in the tournament, Bulls Women had defeated Warwick Uni Women by 5-2 and had to battle all the way to Game 7 to overcome semi-final opponents Leicester City Ligresses, also in their first UK Championships. Leicester won the first game and Bedford replied by winning the next three to establish a 3-1 lead only for Ligresses to reply with a convincing six player victory in Game 5. Bedford stemmed the Leicester recovery by keeping Game 6 to a four player draw and clinch a narrow 3-2 win in Game 7 to make it through to the final.
Southampton had been held to a 3-3 draw by Warwick in the group matches and the two teams were re-matched in the Semi-final. This one was just as tight. Dodgettes started off strongly with a convincing five players to nil win in the first game, but Warwick responded by upping their game, holding Southampton to a 4-4 draw in Game 2 and then winning three straight games, all by just a single player, to take a 3-1 lead. Southampton came back by winning Games 6 and 7 by 5-2 and 5-4, which gave a final score of three games each and took the match into Overtime; Southampton took an early lead in the extra one minute game and extended their lead to run out 6-1 victors and win their place in the Final.
The Third Place Play-off took all seven games to find the medallists and all seven games went the full distance. Leicester Ligresses won the first game; Warwick replied by winning Games 2 & 3, Ligresses then retook the lead by winning the next two games. Game 6 finished as a draw (4-4) and Leicester secured the victory with a narrow four player to three victory in Game 7.
